Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
Q. What is the reputation of the program?
A. This program is very well known in the aviation industry and is recognized as one of the best of its kind. Aviation Flight Management has been running at Confederation since 1973. We have a demanding academic program and flight standards that are rigorous throughout the program resulting in highly qualified, competent graduates who do well in industry.
Q. What resources are available?
A.In addition, our school has two advanced non motion simulators to assist in training our students effectively. The Frasca 142 is a Transport Canada certified level 2 device that can operate in either a single or twin engine configuration. The other flight training device is our Level 6 Baron, also by Frasca. The Baron simulates precisely, the B58 Beech Baron twin engine aircraft in every detail, from cockpit configuration to it's handling, de-icing capabilities, and engine sounds. Its visual system is an 11 foot tall 220 wrap around screen.
Q. Who maintains your aircraft?
A.We have our own highly qualified Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and apprentices on staff.
Q. How many flight hours will be provided in total?
A. Your flight hours are included in the tuition that you pay for that particular semester. Any Transport Canada fees are extra.
Students that graduate from the program will complete their Commercial Pilot Licence requirements which is currently set at 200 hrs; including 24 hours on floats
Q. Do I need previous flight training? What if I have previous flying hours?
A. We get a large number of applicants with a broad range of experience and students at different levels of flight training. No preference is given in the selection to students with previous flight training, however having previous flight training may be an advantage once you are selected to the program.
Q. How many people get to continue to second year?
A. Unlike many schools, Confederation College does not have a quota system. As long as a student meets the required published academic standard and meets the required flight and medical standards you can progress to graduation without having to worry about being "cut out" of our program.
Q. What does the training lead to?
A. Upon completion of the program, the graduate will obtain a Commercial Pilot License with float endorsement and some ski/tail dragger experience. Night training is included in the Commercial License. Our program prepares the graduate for entry level work with a small air carrier, tourist outfitter, or other small aircraft pilot positions. From these entry-level flight positions, the graduate pilots progress to flying larger aircraft for various air carriers. It is important to recognize that although we prepare you to start in these positions, the typical graduate will end up flying in the airlines.
A large percentage of our graduates have progressed to employment with major carriers as well as the Canadian Forces. We have graduates flying for Bearskin Airlines, Wasaya Airways, Jazz, Calm Air, WestJet, Air Canada, Air Bravo, Transport Canada, and several international airlines. Due to the recent shortage of qualified pilots in the industry, there has probably never been a better time to become a licensed pilot. There are plenty of great career options for graduates.
Q. Will I get my multi-IFR rating?
A. At the present time we do the IFR ground school portion of Transport Canada's exam standard but do not complete the flying segment. It is important for students to note that there are very few entry level jobs for multi-IFR pilots. All of our graduates will complete their multi-IFR rating when they are qualified to seek employment with air carriers who require that rating. This is typically after they have acquired about 1,000 hours flight time.
