The School of Aviation at Confederation College has a well established Aviation Technician - Aircraft Maintenance program designed and developed in consultation with Industry and Transport Canada. This program will provide you with the advanced knowledge and skills necessary to develop into a competent and reliable Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.
Aircraft Maintenance is a well-established area of aviation technology with continuing requirements for entry-level personnel. High on the priority list are Aircraft Maintenance Engineers as Industry Canada predicts a shortage of qualified aviation personnel in the near future. Future graduation levels must rise to meet future industry employment demands.
Employment Opportunities:
Graduates have found employment with Fixed Base Operators, Regional Carriers and the Major Airlines. The fixed wing and rotary wing training has afforded the graduate the option of completing his/her apprenticeship on either aircraft or helicopters. Graduates of this program are employed nationally and internationally, either in maintenance or in the overhaul of aircraft, helicopters, engines and components.
Career categories include aircraft maintenance engineers (AME), aircraft inspectors, aircraft gas turbine engine technicians and aircraft structural repair technicians.
Admission Requirements:
1. Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent) with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/College (U/C), or Open (O) preparation levels.
2. or Successful Completion of the Mature Student Assessment.
3. or appropriate credits from the Academic and Career Entrance program (ACE).
Courses Recommended: Grade 12 "Foundations for College Mathematics" (MAP4C) and/or Grade 11 Physics.
If you do not meet the entrance requirements, we encourage you to apply for the Pre-Technology program to facilitate success in your Technology path.
Other Requirements:
Basic Training
Applicants for an AME license "M" rating must successfully complete an Approved Basic Training Course for fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft. Students need a minimum level of knowledge and skill in each of the topics or areas covered in this course as detailed in the learning objectives, to meet specific items in the Transport Canada curriculum.
The program is two years in duration and combines a mixture of theory and practical application. Airframe, engine and electrical courses are taught concurrently; approximately 50% of the time is devoted to practical and 50% to theory.
Advanced Placement:
Accreditation
The program is accredited by Transport Canada and the Canadian Aviation Maintenance Council (CAMC). Graduates having an attendance record greater than 95% are given 18 months credit, determined by Transport Canada, towards the experience requirements for an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer’s Category "M" license.
Articulation Agreements:
Students graduating from the Aviation Technician - Aircraft Maintenance Program at Confederation College with a GPA of at least 3.0 may be awarded extra consideration and some course credit towards the Aviation - Flight Management Program.
